Burlingame's Business Districts

By Emily Beach

Candidate for Council Member; City of Burlingame

Support Policies That Will Promote and Improve Broadway and Downtown Business Districts
I will support policies that promote and improve Downtown and Broadway business districts. The majority of our city's revenue derives from two main sources: visitor taxes generated by our hotels and property taxes paid by our residents. It's important we diversify and support thriving local businesses in Burlingame.

I support:

1. Creating more pedestrian traffic Downtown and on Broadway to help our local businesses thrive.

2. Thoughtful business zoning and development in North Burlingame near Burlingame Plaza, Millbrae station, and along Rollins Road to improve aesthetics and generate additional city revenue.

3. Renewed focus and investment on Broadway. Here are some ideas that I hope to explore with Broadway business owners and learn how the city can help:

  • Re-paint light posts, clean sidewalks, and offer low-interest loans to landlords and tenants for aesthetic and safety improvements like new awnings, fresh paint, and code upgrades.

  • Encourage more outdoor business activities on sidewalks (e.g., outdoor merchandise displays, restaurant seating)

  • Foster an artistic niche on Broadway (e.g. outdoor music, public art, outdoor artisan market) to draw more pedestrian traffic and create a distinct and local brand identity.

4. Cultivating public/private partnerships and philanthropic investment from current and future businesses headquartered in Burlingame. Other neighboring cities benefit from strong partnerships, tax revenue, philanthropic investment, and public benefit projects from major corporations. There are opportunities here in Burlingame for community investment from the private sector. I will work to build relationships that benefit all Burlingame residents.
