Member, Board of Trustees; Santa Monica Community College District

Nancy Greenstein has a lifelong commitment to education.

In 2002, Nancy successfully ran for the Community College Board of Trustees. She has provided successful leadership on state and local levels, advocating for a responsible state funding formula, building relationships with local cities and community organizations, and insuring the continuance of high-quality education and workforce development programs.

This past year the Emeritus College program was threatened with the loss of state funds and, Nancy, working with students and staff, took leadership to successfully save the funding. Since joining the board Nancy has dreamed about a Public Policy Institute at a community college. Never one to give up, with a small grant in 2010, planning began for the program. Santa Monica College offers an AA degree in Public Policy, the first such program in the state and maybe the nation. currently, more than 100 students have graduated from the program and all have transferred to four year institutions.

She is a tireless advocate for career and technical education. The high quality of education at SMC is demonstrated by SMC (for 25 years) remaining the #1 transfer school to UC. The excellent faculty, staff and administration promotes student success and innovation.

There was life before being elected to the College Board. After receiving her Bachelors Degree in Education from Boston University, she taught in a two-room school on the Navajo Reservation in New Mexico. She relocated to Southern California where she received her MSW from UCLA, and continued her work with Native American children and families. Later, Nancy served as a social worker with several Jewish community service agencies.

She worked for the City of West Hollywood where she served as the Public Safety Administrator. She has been recognized by the LA County Sheriff's Department, City of West Hollywood and International Chief's of Police Association for her work with community policing. Her success with community policing programs in West Hollywood led to her current position as a public safety director for the UCLA police department. While working at UCLA she returned to the classroom and received her Doctorate in Education. In spring 2006, she was recognized with the prestigious leadership award from the Educational Leadership Program at the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Sciences.

In additional to her professional activities, she has been appointed or elected to positions of leadership on dozens of boards and commissions locally and regionally. Some of her Santa Monica area activities include: (partial list past and present)
