Improving Education/Job Training in Sonoma County

By Keith Rhinehart

Candidate for County Supervisor; Sonoma County; Supervisorial District 4

This information is provided by the candidate
While a free public Education is a State and Federal mandate, there are still ways in which we can improve our schools and deliver job-ready applicants to the workforce.
It's been said lately by our local leaders that 72% of our high school graduates will not go onto a four-year college. What will these young Citizens do to provide for their future families? The answer is simple, really - We have Agriculture, Hospitality, Healthcare, Light manufacturing... All of these careers can be accessed with a good high school education, a two-year college or technical school, or a traditional four-years or more college degree. We need to expand on the current Career Technical Education program in Windsor and spread CTE throughout the County as an adjunct to our current academic curriculum. We need to work with County employers to determine what "job-ready" means to them so we may deliver graduates ready for work.
We also need to stop the outflow of students from Cloverdale by increasing employment opportunities in the North County. The S.M.A.R.T. tracks will provide freight-hauling opportunities for light manufacturing applications and for East-West public transit lines. Providing employment in Cloverdale will be key to restoring the school system and Community to vibrancy.
We need to equalize our Education processes. For some reason, more boys get routed into Special Education than girls. Something is working against Boys in our Educational system, which results in an unbalanced "schools-to-prisons pipeline" which is mostly inhabited by boys and young men. When public Education and administration reaches a balance, there will be many fewer students entering the Special Education system within our schools and there will be gender equity as a result. We need to keep our troubled youth in schools, and not suspend or expel them into Community idleness, which only leads them to make poor choices.
As far as Education goes, I see the County as an employer, delivering the basic services a Community needs not just to survive, but to thrive and become more fulfilling to our Citizens, while at the same time backing away from "Nanny-state" over-regulation that has slowed opportunities for responsible growth and development in our Community. So if we need to hire more "rank and file" employees to deliver Government services, so be it. What we DON'T need are more intrusive Government regulations.
