Safe Neighborhoods for All Citizens & Immigration

By Keith Rhinehart

Candidate for County Supervisor; Sonoma County; Supervisorial District 4

This information is provided by the candidate
A safe Neighborhood is connected to itself and other Neighborhoods through parks, shared Community activities and policing.
We are all concerned about public safety - any free and Civil society must provide safety to its Citizens. A Safe Neighborhood used to mean a neighborhood relatively free of crime, with safe access for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles, and regular Community patrols for crime awareness and prevention as well as to build relationships in our Neighborhoods.
Nowadays Citizens face new threats, from aggressive cyclists, war-like police and ICE tactics, failing infrastructure such as streets and lighting and "Neighborhood Associations" that aggressively lobby our local officials with "Not In My Back Yard" actions that pit one Neighborhood's desire against the entire Community's need to provide employment, reduce GHG emissions or improve public transit. One of the main issues in our neighborhoods of color is the need to compel our state and Federal representatives to finally "fix" Immigration in California. So many of our neighbors came here for the freedom and opportunities the U.S. provides even her temporary workers. Remember, we invited them here. So much of our Agricultural prosperity has depended on low-wage labor that 68% of our population won't even perform, leaving it to the 70% of immigrants to get food from the farm to our tables. Many of these workers hold two-three jobs just to survive in our economy and have children Citizens in our schools daily. We MUST find a way to provide a path to Citizenship for our good neighbors who have contributed so much to our Community through our "underground" economies, mainly Agriculture and Hospitality. It must include some measure of amnesty. We cannot continue to destroy the very families who contribute directly to our prosperity by separation, prosecution and deportation. We need to bring all of our People out into the sunlight.
We also need to fix and maintain our streets and roads. We need to truly "Share the Road" with all users in a courteous manner that doesn't conflict with the CA Motor Vehicle Code. We don't need "Vulnerable User Protection" ordinances, which should be repealed at the State and local level, we simply need to slow down, move over or stop to avoid an accident. With regard to police agencies, we need to expect and demand "Community Policing," with foot patrols in areas that can be managed in this way, even partially. And finally, we need a Law Enforcement Oversight Board with the power to compel changes in police protocols and armaments, subpoena witnesses and compel disciplinary action, up to and including termination and prosecution if warranted.
