Preserve Our Coastside

Pillar Point was originally developed, starting in 1939, as a harbor of safe refuge for the commercial fishing fleet and other small boats. One of the most important functions of the Harbor District is to provide ocean search and rescue services. The District's well-trained staff responds to over 100 distress calls per year, saving countless lives. These critical services must continue and be supported.

The commercial fishing fleet and recreational boaters at Pillar Point Harbor share the coastside with farmers, flower growers, small business owners, and residents who value a rural way of life. This coastside experience is one that should be preserved for both the local residents and people from throughout San Mateo County and the greater Bay Area.

As a young man, I crewed on commercial fishing boats in the Farallones fishery. The men and women who earn their living on the sea are special people. Pillar Point is one of the few places on the Northern California coast where people can buy fish directly from these commercial fishermen. If you haven't had this experience, I encourage you to visit. You will meet some wonderful people.

I will preserve Pillar Point Harbor as a treasured resource for future generations and protect our search and rescue operations, along with the commercial fishing fleet.
