I have been a resident of Alameda County since moving to Oakland as a Jesuit Volunteer in 1976. I earned a BA from Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania and a JD from the University of Maryland School of Law.

My professional experience includes 10 years as an Oakland City Councilmember as well as 3 decades of community organizing with the Oakland Community Organizations, the National Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs, and the United Seniors of Oakland and Alameda County.

I am presently the President of the Board of Supervisors, Chair of the Local Agency Formation Commission, Secretary for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, and a member of the Alameda County Transportation Commission, Association of Bay Area Governments' Regional Policy Council, and the Coliseum/Arena Joint Powers Authority.
