Candidate for
Board Member; San Bruno Park School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I have lived in San Bruno for the past 25 years with my wife, Susan and our children, CJ and Amanda. Both of my children attended San Bruno Park School District Schools, Portola and Crestmoor Elementary and Parkside Jr. High School. CJ graduated with a degree in Construction Management from Sacramento State University, while Amanda graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Their San Bruno education prepared them for their futures.

I have worked as a automotive mechanic, an automotive service manager, parts manager and body shop manager. I also worked in the restaurant supply business as a inventory, shipping and warehouse manager. I have been an union member, SF665, SF1305 and SM1414. Involved in different industries, I have managed people and business profits. I attended a trade school for automotive mechanics. Furthering my education, I attended General Motors University of Automotive Management, completing the curriculum for Service Management.

For over 20 years, I have been involved with schools and educational issues, working towards quality education not only for my children, but the children in the San Bruno community.

I have been a school volunteer during my children's time in elementary school, chaperoning field trips, working in the school offices plus yard duty. I was a PTA President at two schools, Portola and Crestmoor. I have coached in San Bruno for AYSO and Lowen Club soccer, San Bruno Girls Softball, San Bruno T-Ball, Pee-Wee and Jr. Giants Baseball. I also coached flag-football at Parkside Jr. High and High School Varsity Girls Softball in the Bay Division. I coordinated and installed the marquee signs at Portola and Crestmoor Elementary Schools. I am a member of the St. Roberts Church.

I served as San Bruno Park School District trustee from 2001-2006, first being appointed to the board and then being elected. During my time on the board, I strived to raise the quality of education in the district. I served on many school district committees such as policy and procedures, park and recreation, emergency preparedness district employee negotiation committees and others. I was also board president twice.

During my years on the San Bruno Park School Board:

  • Modernization of all schools sites
  • Re-building of Belle Air School
  • Proposed to the board the idea of selling the Carl Sandburg site which had not been used as a school site for 25 years.
  • Collaborately worked with the other board members in the sale of the Carl Sandburg site for $30M.
  • Successful in maintaining balance budget and able to provide employees with salary increases within our budget parameters.
  • Sounds fiscal policy, no deficit spending.
  • Set high standards of student achievement
  • No schools in PI status (no child left behind)

After being on the board for 6 years, so that there would be no question of a conflict of interest, I resigned my position on the board to apply for a job as Maintenance Director of the San Bruno Park School District. Due to my construction background, I felt that I could better serve our school district as Maintenance Director to improve the maintenance at our schools. Although, I did not obtain the job, I never gave up on my passion for quality education for San Bruno Park School District students. Although some people may call me intense or stern, what I really am is passionate about education, not just any education, but a quality education for all children. Just like a young child who keeps asking why, I feel the same way, "why or sometimes why not? Why can we not provide a quality education for the students of San Bruno?

I understand how today's economy and unemployment have put undo pressures and hardships on the families in our community. Since my children are adults and out of school, I have the time to devote myself to being a trustee. I will work very passionately for your children's education.

With my extensive background and proven record as a trustee plus the person with most years of experience (6 years) of any candidate, I respectively ask for your vote on November 8, 2011 for San Bruno Park School District Trustee.

Thank you.

Chuck Zelnik
