Encourage high acheivement

By Daniel William Deane

Candidate for Member, Governing Board; San Bernardino City Unified School District

recognize and encourage high achieving students
My daughter attended San Bernardino High School. She was a good student and was able to get her High School Diploma and eventually her college degree from Cal State San Bernardino. In high school she maintained a B+ average and she had minimal discipline problems. I asked her if she had been asked to join The National Honor Society because of her good grades. I was shocked to find that of the 5 comprehensive high schools in the district, only Cajon High School participates in National Honor Society. Further, none of the districts middle schools participate in Junior Honor Society.

The district needs to do more to encourage the high achieving students. I would like to see a high school similar to Richardson Prep that has a no nonsense curriculum and discipline policy. I also want to see vocational education brought back to our campuses. Not everyone wants or has the ability to graduate college, but everyone can receive and learn marketable skills. Rather than have all our schools work toward the unattainable goal a college degree, lets work in some vocational education. I envision a partnership between business, industry and schools to produce high school graduates who have job skills.
