What Can the AUSD School Board Do Better?

By Gary Hack

Candidate for Board Member; Antioch Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
There are always a number of issues which need to addressed by a School Board. Some are more critical than others. Here are my top 3 priorities to be addressed by the Board - by necessity or mandate - after the November election
Top Three Priorities For Improvement By the AUSD School:
1. An Accurate Understanding of Fiscal Solvency - (a)turn down the "sky is falling" rhetoric. It's not. (b)Hire a Chief Business Officer who can last more than 2 years (4 CBOs in past 10 years) with a consistent approach, plan and vision (c)Review and analyze all economic documents from the past 3 years to gain an accurate picture of the district's fiscal solvency and needs (d)Review the dozens of fiscal recommendations put forward by FCMAT, School Solutions, Budget Advisory Committee, and the Board. (e)Decide priorities and timelines ... and then put them in place (f)Bargain with employee groups in a humane and professional manner to reach a timely settlement tied to actual documented needs.

2. Hire and Retain Personnel: (a)Avoid excessive layoffs and disruption of both student and employee lives (b)Realize that education is a human business and without both students and employees the district has no reason to exist and the education of our children cannot happen (c)Hire District administrative leadership who don't use the AUSD as an asterisk on theor resume and as a pit stop to somewhere else. Currently, the longevity of all Cabinet level administrators is 1 year(Superintendent)...or less...or not hired yet. (d)Develop a consistency in vision, planning, curriculum options, fiscal alternatives and buy in to each ... by including all stakeholders in the process

3. Safety: (a)Use all available resources to proactively address ongoing campus safety concerns voiced by students, teachers and the community (b)Insure consistent enforcement of district established sadety policies and matrix guidelines (c)Continue to address the issues with due diligence
