Meet Steve Rosen, candidate for election to the School Board of the San Diego Unified School District.

Steve's candidacy for the Board of Education for the San Diego Unified School District is based on his concern that the District's lack of vision and sound, professional, financial management is denying our children the skills they will need to compete in an increasingly complex world. Not one to pass the buck, Steve dug in, poured through and studied the District published "Budget Book and the District's priorities. With two boys in public school, Steve became very concerned how the proposed budget cutbacks would affect the District's children. When he raised questions about significant discrepancies and various issues he found, a senior school district official told him not to "sweat the details." Steve is committed to "sweating the details." His business demands it.

Steve's interest in our children's education is not new. It is a long standing commitment. Steve grew up in an academic household and is himself a product of public education. His father is a Professor Emeritus of Communications at California State Fullerton. Steve has donated time and resources to the Office of College, Career and Technical Information at San Diego Unified School District. His Company's Pro Bono efforts were instrumental in SDUSD receiving over $9 million in grants monies from the State of California. These dollars are providing secondary school students with the opportunity to explore and develop their skills in all fields of Information Technology.

Steve and his family live in the community of Scripps Ranch where his sons, Joshua and Jakob attend Jerabek Elementary School. A graduate of University High School in west Los Angeles, Steve holds a Bachelor of Arts in Earth Sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Master of Science in Geology from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. His wife, Susan, is a full-time homemaker, wood worker and school volunteer working both in the boys' classrooms and for various school wide projects such as helping to manage the daily morning running club. Steve is an unaffiliated member of the Jewish community and Susan is an active member of Reformation Lutheran Church in Clairemont Mesa.

An enthusiastic supporter of youth sports, Steve has voluntarily coached Little League teams both for Spring and Fall ball working with the local Scripps Ranch Little League and all the while providing additional resources (batting cage and pitching mound) at no charge to the league kids. Additionally, Steve spent two years working for the Los Angeles Olympic Committee and was part to the executive committee to the organization responsible for putting on the boxing competition for the 1984 Olympic Games in LA.

While working at the local Univision television station in San Diego in the early 90's, Steve was very active in the local Hispanic community and was elected and served on the San Diego Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

TV Magic, through their work with SDUSD has a standing agreement with the District to provide student and instructor job shadows, service learning opportunities and internships to help place advanced students into internships in a variety of industry-related professions. Most recently, Steve and TV Magic have started to review some new media and associated technology teaching infrastructures at a San Diego Charter School to help teachers better teach students on a one-on-one level and to better facilitate the student learning process. Steve's focus is on Kids First and he fully supports the teachers who provide for the stewardship of the educational process and creative ways for teachers to better interact and work with their individual students.
