Community Involvement

By Robert E. "Bob" Dugan

Candidate for Council Member; City of San Buenaventura

Gettting out of the mess our City Government is in will take all of our involvement.
My greatest concern and the reason I became a candidate is the loss of voice of the common person. They live here and work here, or perhaps work elsewhere, and have little time to be on top of what's happening on the city council or in the city until a city action or inaction becomes an issue in their life. They elect people they think will work for their best interests as well as those of the rest of the citizens. Then, out of the blue, things go haywire and the city is acting as though what they want is all that counts and the rest be damned. Take, for instance, the County hospital's new addition. If there had been better on-going communication with the neighborhoods and the full scope of the project disclosed, there might not have been a lawsuit. Maybe if they could have found a way to compromise they would not have had to expend precious funds needlessly. We want the government to be more fiscally responsible but the only way we, the people, can get a response is to sue them. It is like the government continues on its merry way with no regard for the people they serve. My main goal, if elected, is to bring the city back to the people it serves. To not only be responsive but active in the restoration of people's rights and the reining in of uncontrolled government interference with those rights. But it takes the community to take up this cause for real change to occur not just a Council member.

We live in one the best places on earth. There are those in high places that would change it for the needs of a few, e.g., the developers. Why is it that the city can offer big business tax breaks but wants more from us, Measure A? The consumers continue to bolster the needs of the city council who would have you reelect them on November 3rd so they can continue to push their agendas of more taxes and more high rises. Why should we lose our mountain and/or ocean views in order to feed the developers? Why do we need towering buildings? Measure B speaks to this issue by creating a plan that brings all the players together to strategize how in-fill can happen. It provides for a process that will prevent wholesale development that fails to consider any needs other than those of the developers, who are not local businesses more often than not. They have no stake in the resulting changes to the way the city looks and feels.
