Ventura County, CA
November 3, 2009 Election
New ways the City has found to increase revenues.
Our city government has become indignant that our older residents are not contributing to our coffers in the same amount as newcomers. They have found ways to intimidate them and raise fears of losing their homes via proactive code enforcement. They are out there harassing our citizens on fixed incomes about changes on their properties, (i.e. granny flats and converted garages) that may or may not have been permitted. The city has acknowledged that they may have lost many of the permit records. In order to man this proactive enforcement, they have used personnel vacancies in the fire department to increase code enforcement staff (when we are "short" on public safety staff????). Their thinking - if you remove those citizens that have lived in Ventura a long time, the tax base will go up with the new residents which, for the City, is a real coup. The other way to make this right is to grand father these safe properties so that those who live there can remain, or continue to use them as income to support their living in other facilities due to age. The government needs to have more compassion for those who are unable to afford to make the changes.
