By Penny Elsebusch

Candidate for Director; McKinleyville Community Services District

Current Measure B assessment will expire in 2011/12
Measure B, will expire in fiscal year 2011/12, and the District will not have sufficient funds for maintenance of sports fields and the District's recreation facilities and any expansion of recreation facilities. In order to keep the status quo, the voters will either have to agree to a new property assessment - a flat rate parcel tax like we have now - to replace Measure B or look to other creative financing. We have to be able to maintain the recreation facilities in some way, otherwise Little League and the soccer teams would be gone along with the users of the Activity Center. I strongly support the skate park and believe they are moving in the right direction with a grant writer and currently trying to get local firms to donate goods and their time to build it which is how Hiller Park sports fields were built for little money. A bond measure should not be considered for maintaining any of the recreation facilities as bonds are based on all real and personal property taxes that increase each year and the amount is based on your property's assessed value.

Water and sewer funds which are paid by rate payers cannot be used for maintaining, operating or further developing parks and recreation facilities.
