Academic Accountability

By Kelly Rocchio

Candidate for Board Member; Hayward Unified School District; 2 Year Short Term

This information is provided by the candidate
Hayward Unified School District is very diverse and we must work hard to address all learning styles and achievement levels with an engaging and motivating curriculum. We must educate our students and their families if we truly want to move forward in this District. We need to identify and remove the barriers currently creating this huge achievement gap between the different areas in Hayward. We can't just patch up the places we pick and choose, we must allow parents to stop chasing the "good" schools. I ask myself:
  • Why should families feel the need to leave their neighborhood to seek out the best education for their children?
  • Shouldn't we be working to make the schools all across Hayward better rather than shuttling our children all over town?
  • Are we doing everything we can to support and partner with all cultures and learning styles in our schools?
  • How can we say an API represents a demographic area when the majority of the students are there on transfers?

I realize there will always be differences in the schools. What I do not accept is that Hayward has done their best to close that gap. We must work to get the community active and connected in the education process. We will all have a more successful future if we give every student the opportunity to reach their full potential. We must give each and every child the skills to become meaningful members of our community. Education is more than learning how to test well and chasing high API scores. We must establish a fair and equitable education process across the City of Hayward for the welfare of all of our students.
