Stability in HUSD

By Kelly Rocchio

Candidate for Board Member; Hayward Unified School District; 2 Year Short Term

This information is provided by the candidate
I believe we must establish stability at the school level immediately! Since 2005 HUSD has welcomed nearly 30 principals. That number is staggering and our children notice! One of the most important things we can give our children is strong leadership and consistency. A strong principal can provide great leadership for a school, but it takes time. We must emphasize stability at the school level where students feel the immediate impact of change. How can we expect our schools to develop long-term goals and bonds with our students when the staff knows they may not be there next year? It takes time to set goals and put strategies in place to achieve the desired outcomes.

High teacher turnover is a contributing factor to academic achievement. We must treat our staff with dignity and respect and find a way to motivate and retain our school staff. High turnover results in low commitment and often leaves the lower achieving schools struggling to fill open positions. As a District we must find a way to stop this revolving door and make our school environment stable and inspiring for the staff.
