While my "official" connection with MPC was established only four years ago, I have been involved with higher education all my adult life. I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 1973 and for the next two years I remained there as a lecturer.

After graduate school (my Ph.D. is from UCLA in psychology) I helped create UCSC's Alumni Association, eventually serving as its President. My family has established a scholarship endowment for students with financial need, and each year the Steck Award is given to the undergraduate who completes the finest senior thesis at UC Santa Cruz. For the past 15 years, I have served on the Board of Trustees of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, and continue to serve on its Executive Committee and as the chair of its Finance Committee. I also continue to teach at UC Santa Cruz.

At MPC the most important work I have done is in creating the process and chairing the committees through which Doug Garrison and Carl Ehmann were hired to lead the campus. This work is important for two reasons: Not only were my committees successful in terms of outcomes, we also modeled for the campus how to interact cooperatively, respectfully and effectively.

For the past four years, I have been MPC's representative on the Community Human Services Board of Directors. This organization provides a number of social service programs on the Monterey Peninsula including family and individual counseling, drug- and alcohol-rehabilitation programs and services for homeless youth.

My experience with the UC Santa Cruz Foundation has allowed me to help streamline the processes used by the MPC Foundation and to help it do a better job of supporting the college.

Lastly, effective trusteeship requires some technical knowledge and a certain attitude. I am proud that, for the past three years, I have served the Community College League of California by helping to train newly elected Trustees across the state.
