Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Scott Svonkin

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; San Gabriel Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

I am very excited about running for SGUSD Board, because I want to work to further improve our schools for my own children (Rose and Sam) and every child in our community. I love San Gabriel. Many of you know that I am very passionate about making our community better. I believe the best place to start improving San Gabriel is by making our schools better and the lives of our children better. I am committed to making sure our kids reach their full potential.

One of the keys to a successful school is parental involvement. Parental involvement at school and in the home is crucial. We need to provide more parental education programs to teach parents how to be involved, how to make sure their children are completing and understanding their homework, how to communicate with the teacher, and how to deal with problems.

Communication is the key to involving parents in our schools and inviting the community to support our children. I want to work to improve communication between parents and teachers. We need to make sure parents know what is happening in their child's classroom. We must improve technology so we cn track our kids' success or areas they need to work on for improvement.

Our children must be prepared for life in a world that is run with technology. Our world is very different today than when I went to school thirty years ago, and it is changing so quickly that we must welcome pilot programs and innovation so our children will be able to succeed in life and in business. We must encourage our teachers and students to think globally but take action locally. We must prepare our children for their futures. If our kids want to go to Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, or Yale, we must make sure they are ready. Or, if they want to go to Pasadena City College, and then to a California State University, like I did, we must make sure they are ready. If a child wants to become a doctor, lawyer, plumber, Fire Fighter, Police Officer, engineer, or auto mechanic, we must make sure that child is ready for his or her future.

I want to help make our schools all they can be so that we truly prepare our children to achieve their dreams. I ask for your support and your vote on November 6, 2007
