Health Care Is A Right

By Sidney "Sid" Gold

Candidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 38; Democratic Party

This information is provided by the candidate
A doctor who understands and who has been active in healthcare delivery will be able to effect changes in Sacramnto that benefits all Californians
A recent headline ( Daily News , March 16, 2006) reads "Health care shabby for all." The article describes "equal opportunity defects" in the health care system. This is a disgrace.

Forty five million Americans and seven million Californians are uninsured. Without health care delivery reform we are all facing the risks of this deteriorating system.

As a physician I am intimately aware of the problems that patients face in accessing quality medical care. I want to insure that everyone can have affordable, accessible and quality health care.

We have all read of the closures of emergency rooms and hospitals and the prediction that it will be worse in the future. In addition, our aging population increases greater demands on health care: more demand with a decrease in supply.

What do I propose?

Firstly, there is waste in the system: too much duplication, top to bottom management of doctors, over prescribing of medications, and the inflated high salaries for insurance executives have to stop. Documentation of patient care - paperwork- can take up to fifty percent of the doctor's time - time away from the patient! We must change these bureaucratuc demands.

That our current system is characterized as a "uniformly low standard" by health care experts suggests to me that improvements must be achieved.

If elected to the Assembly I will propose changes in coordination of provider groups, greater standardization of care, which means that disparities in the current health delivery system should be reduced. I will encourage opening and starting programs to educate more nurses to reduce the current shortage of qualified nursing staff. In addition, I find our current system relies more on prescription than education and intervention and I will allocate resources that stress prevention of illness.
