Improving Our Schools

By Martin Marcus

Candidate for Board Member; San Diego Unified School District; Trustee Area B

This information is provided by the candidate
It should go without saying that student performance and learning are areas that can always be improved. We need to take steps to curb social promotion. Improvements in student achievement are best accomplished through smaller classes, extending learning time, providing meaningful curriculum in creative ways.

Another component to improving student learning is to keep parents involved in their children's education. Family participation programs, such as "Family Math Night", may be one way to encourage parent involvement. This program was popular in some elementary schools, but it could be expanded to include middle schools as well as other academic areas.

To help curb the flow of students out of traditional public high schools, we need to offer more flexible programs that can help our students to be successful. We need more programs that offer practical job skills. We need better partnership programs with key industries and unions to work with our schools and students.
