Ken Yeager's Distinguished Career in Santa Clara County

Ken Yeager serves as a member of the San Jose City Council, representing Council District 6, which includes more than 90,000 residents who live in the neighborhoods of Willow Glen, Rose Garden, Shasta/Hanchett, Sherman Oaks, Cory, Canoas Gardens, Hamann Park, and Buena Vista. He was elected in November 2000 and re-elected to a second term in 2004.

As a member of the City Council, Ken serves on a number of Council Committees and Commissions that help him make progress on his top priorities, including completing a citywide trail system, protecting the quality of life in our neighborhoods, and improving education and child care facilities. Ken chairs the Council's All Children Achieve Committee and the Aging Services Master Plan Committee, and he serves on the Making Government Work Better Committee. He also serves on the boards of Caltrain and the Valley Transportation Authority. He was appointed in 2004 to chair the Council's Blue Ribbon Task Force reviewing the City's ethics and lobbyist ordinances.

Ken earned his B.A. in Political Science from San Jose State University and his Ph.D. in education from Stanford University. Prior to his election, he taught in the Political Science Department at SJSU for 12 years. Ken recently completed the Senior Executives in State and Local Government Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, as well as the Ethics in Public Service Program sponsored by the Josephson Institute of Ethics.

Ken continues to teach one course at San Jose State University, utilizing community involvement and City Council experience in the process. He is an avid runner, having completed 24 marathons and numerous triathlons. He often runs on trails in San Jose, which has led him to be a leader on the City Council for completion of a citywide trail system. He is the first openly gay elected official in San Jose.
