If elected to the Board of Supervisors, I will focus on the following critical issues to improve our quality of life in Santa Clara County:

1. Improve local schools to ensure that Santa Clara County has the educated workforce necessary to support a thriving economy. As a professor at SJSU with a PhD in education from Stanford and as the chair of the All Children Achieve Committee, I will continue to fight hard for education as a County Supervisor. In order for Silicon Valley to keep its competitive edge in our globalized economy, we must ensure that our schools are producing well-educated future employees.

2. Ensure that planned transportation and traffic relief projects are completed. Silicon Valley companies lose millions of dollars every year in lost productivity because of the inadequacy of our roads, highways and mass transit. That is why, as 5-year member of the Caltrain Board of Directors, I pushed for the creation of the Caltrain Baby Bullet service that gets commuters from San Francisco to San Jose in under one hour. I will push to extend BART to Silicon Valley, complete the light rail system, expand Mineta Int'l Airport, electrify Caltrain and complete planned road and highway improvements.

3. Expand Regional Economic Development. Santa Clara County needs to be the best place to start and grow a business. Acting in a regional manner, the County can help create jobs, attract and retain companies of all sizes, ensure access to quality healthcare and implement education and job training programs to re-train workers for 21st Century jobs.

4. Ensure public safety departments have the best training and equipment to respond quickly to 911 calls and keep you and your family safe.

5. Keep our communities healthy. We must identify ways to reduce the cost of healthcare and provide a minimum level of coverage for seniors and children. Our local hospitals must have top notch doctors and nurses and the latest technology.

6. Improve Ethics and Open Government. I led the effort in San Jose, along with former Vice Mayor Pat Dando, to write tough lobbying laws as chair of the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Ethics Reform. I continue to be a leader on open government reform and I will continue this work at the County.

7. Resolve Conflicts between the City and County. Santa Clara County and the City of San Jose face many tough challenges ahead, none of which are benefiting from lawsuits. The City and County need to work together on issues important to residents and businesses.
