Shelia Young has been a leader in our community since 1973 when she first opened her own business in Oakland, a paralegal/stenographic business serving legal and public sector companies.

Shelia Young sold her business when she was elected Mayor of San Leandro in 1998 in order to devote herself full-time to the duties of Mayor. Responding to the community's needs, Shelia focused her attention on improving the economic landscape for citizens and business owners, turning under-utilized land into housing affordable to city residents, and improving public safety.

Seeking to influence decision-making on complex issues related to transportation, economic development and the environment, Shelia has been a leader on a number of important county and regional boards and commissions. This collaboration has given Shelia insight into the relationship between local and county government and how to better coordinate information and services to bring about change.

Shelia Young is a reliable public servant who has resided in Alameda County (Alameda, Oakland and San Leandro) for almost forty years. In facing tough challenges throughout her career, she has shown passion, determination and effectiveness--qualities that she will bring to the Board of Supervisors.

Shelia is married to J.T. "Irish" Loughran, who is a retired general contractor. They have three children and four grandchildren.
