Exit Exam

By Chris Dobbins

Candidate for Director; Oakland Unified School District; District 6

This information is provided by the candidate
The exit exam is a mandatory test for all graduating seniors in the State of California. Whatever your feelings about this mandatory standardized exam, the reality of the situation is that it is not going away anytime soon--the State Board of Education recently passed the resolution, by a unanimous vote, to continue to administer the exam.

The exam is written at an 8th grade level for math and 10th grade level for English, so a graduating senior should not have a problem passing the exam. However, some students are failing the exam; and these students need the support of teachers, parents, and community members in order to pass the exam. Support can include additional instruction in core subjects, summer school classes, after-school tutoring, etc.

Support might also mean providing an alternative to the exam. No student who has invested a great deal of time and effort trying to pass the exit exam should have to leave school empty handed.

I propose instituting a Senior Portfolio Project for those who have tirelessly tried to pass the exit exam but who have, for whatever reason, come up short. This project would be a compilation of the student's high school work that the student can show potential employers in order to paint a true picture of his or her potential for success in the workforce
