After-school Activities

By Chris Dobbins

Candidate for Director; Oakland Unified School District; District 6

This information is provided by the candidate
Extracurricular activities are an essential part of our education. Music, arts, and sports are not "extras" and should not be cut at the first sign of budget constraints. Measure E (the Oakland Parcel tax) defrays some of the costs of these programs, but a larger amount of funding can come from community partnerships with business.

For example, the Oakland A's helped fix Greenman Field at Havenscourt Middle School. The A's invested in what was once a dilapidated field in the park and provided private funding to fix the field. Greenman Field is now a "model" baseball diamond and a great asset for the young people of East Oakland and the students of Havenscourt.

I propose that the Oakland School Board actively seek partnerships with businesses to support public education. Additional programs that support public education will only enhance the academic careers of Oakland students and restore the music, arts, and sports activities that are an essential part of everyone's education.
