Charter Schools

By Chris Dobbins

Candidate for Director; Oakland Unified School District; District 6

This information is provided by the candidate
Although charter schools are publicly funded, they do not fall directly under the control of local school boards. Philosophically, I am not opposed to charter schools, private schools, or any school that positively affects a student's education. However, under the current funding system, Oakland's charter schools are diverting money from public schools, and, as we all know, Oakland's public schools are often under funded. Public schools receive funds based on their average daily attendance. When students attend any school other than a public school, funds earmarked for those students are not available to the public schools.

I propose that the Oakland School Board adopt some of the positive features of charter schools. One such feature is encouraging parents to participate in their children's learning. The Oakland School Board needs to find ways to increase parental participation, possibly by using already-involved parents to reach out to those who until now haven't been involved. By adopting these features, we will make our public schools more appealing to parents and increase the funds flowing into our public school system.
