Why I Decided to Run

By Serge Alexander Chernay

Candidate for United States Representative; District 5

This information is provided by the candidate
Today, America's security is severly threatened by terrorism. We must secure our borders. The education system must be improved. The time has come to reform our social security and IRS tax codes. We must take steps to stop the errosion of our traditional moral values.
As, a career military man, one who participated at the highest levels of the governing process in Washington, I was concerned that the only candidate for the highly responsible and demanding Congressional seat was being offered to a spouse out of sympathy reasons rather than substantive knowledge and experience. Today, America finds itself in the most perilous time in its history. National security is of the utmost priority, yet, we see a lack of solidarity in support of the war on terror. I have fought in Vietnam, participated in defense policy formulation at the highest levels of the Department of Defense, and taught at the Air War College. This experience has given me an in depth knowledge and appreciation of the gravity of the war on terrorism, and what is required keep America safe.

Children are the hope and future of this Nation. We must secure our schools and strengthen our educational standards. We are faced with critical issues of reforming our social security program, and simplifying our tax codes. I am also concerned about the attacks on American traditions, our cultural beliefs, and a the growing decay of our moral fiber. As a result of the above considerations, I decided it was my duty to submit my name for the candidacy of the 5th Congressional district.

Following is an elaboration of the issues I believe is critical to the future of America:

Issues of National Security
- America is in a World War with Terrorism.
- For first time in our history all of America is directly threatened.
- Life as we have known it prior to 9/11 has changed dramatically and will continue to change until we win the war.
- Not allow exigencies of war to erode Constitutional rights.
- Must continue the battle until the back of terrorism is broken.
- Allow the Terrorists no sanctuary.
- Must take the fight to the terrorists, fight on their soil to avoid terrorism on American streets.
- Vigorously pursue non-proliferation of nuclear weapons & technology.
- Take a more proactive role in controlling nuclear storage and waste sites in nuclear States.
- Secure our borders and address the issue of illegal immigrants. Enforce legal immigration and create a "guest worker program".

Social Issues

Education
- Raise standards and quality of American education.
- Resist budget cuts that impact on education. Children are America's hope and future.
- Seek Federal fiscal support for states facing educational budget crisis.
- Full funding of No Child Left Behind.
- Today, many High School students have little knowledge of American history, limited knowledge of civics and how our Government functions. As a result most young people have no interest in the Democratic process. A dangerous sign for the future.

Support Social Security Reforms.
- current system is heading for bankruptcy.
- solving future SS deficits by raising SS taxes is not the answer.
- some portion must be in private savings or investment.
- must find a bipartisan solution.

Income Tax Reforms
- income tax codes need to be simplified
- flat tax should be studied possibly in combination with a national sales tax.
- the IRS bureaucracy is too great, and uses too much of the tax revenue for its support.

Moral Issues
- Strongly defend the US Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.
- Defend the basic principles that created this great nation.
- Resist the attacks to references of God and prayers, especially on traditional American ceremonies such as Presidential Inaugurations, opening session of Congress, pledge of allegiance to the flag.
- Defend against revision of American history such as not revealing the true reason why Pilgrims came to America
- Resist attempts to legalize same sex marriages.
