Support Local Businesses

By Larry Barnett

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Sonoma

This information is provided by the candidate
Local businesses form an essential part of our community, but large, multi-national chains can put them out of business.
All across America, large multi-national chains have destroyed downtown economies and forced thousands of small businesses into bankruptcy. As the population of the valley grows, our area will become more attractive to large retailers, and we must be prepared to protect our local business community. This requires a multi-part program of economic assistance, active recruitment of high-pay high-value non-retail sector jobs, and zoning rules that prevent large buildings.

At present, no such program exists, except in some activities of the Redevelopment Agency. A fully-developed and well planned program can help Sonoma avoid the type of economic disruption and physical transformation that has been such a problem elsewhere.
