Preserve and Protect our Environment

By Larry Barnett

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Sonoma

This information is provided by the candidate
Our hillsides, creeks and streams need better protection from development and degradation
The hillsides surrounding Sonoma are relatively undeveloped and form a scenic backdrop to our community. In order to protect them from development, we must encourage Sonoma County to fully implement a hillside protection measure limiting development and establishing standards for development that can occur. In addition, the City must establish an open space acquisition fund to provide for the purchase of particularly sensitive parcels both in the hillsides and the valley floor.

Creeks and streams need better protection, too. Set-back areas need to be increased and enforced so that building does not occur in these vulnerable habitats. Creek cleanup and restoration need to be funded so that flooding is reduced and fisheries are able to become re-established. Finally, limits should be set on the amount of water that can be extracted from Sonoma Creek, to lessen impacts on wildlife and the watershed as a whole.
