Building a Cohesive Board

By Adriana M. Garza

Candidate for Board Member; Alum Rock Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The role of the Board in creating an academic environment where children can succeed is key to the future success of the District. I will work to ensure that we build a united, cohesive and coordinated team working towards our main goal of providing our students with a quality education.
For too long, the Alum Rock School Board has been best known for its fractious and contentious relations amongst the Board members. The result has been a shift in focus from educating our children to politics on the Board. Parents and community are asking for leadership and direction from the Board so that we can move on with the business of making Alum Rock Schools something we can all be proud of.

My work as Executive Director of a community based non-profit has given me the background and experience of working with diverse groups and people to achieve common goals. I will bring this experience to my work on the Board if elected. People I have worked with tell me that I am a good listener, hear all sides and do my homework before arriving at decisions. I also know how to compromise on issues in order to build consensus and consider success only when everyone walks away feeling that they contributed, were heard and at least got something out of the process.

I will work hard to help unite the Board and to focus our energies on working with the Administration and the community to reach our goal of providing our children with the best education possible.
