Reaching out to Parents and the Community

By Adriana M. Garza

Candidate for Board Member; Alum Rock Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I firmly believe that education of our students is everybody's responsibility. Educated students become responsible contributing adults that benefit our greater society. We need to engage parents and the community into the process of providing a quality education for our students.
If we are to turn Alum Rock Schools around and build a quality District it is going to take everybody in the community to get involved. I believe parents and the community want to help, but they don't know how best to volunteer their time and talent. The Board needs to set the tone for the District that we need parent and community participation. It isn't enough to invite parents to participate and then not show them how or worse yet, not make them feel welcome when they do venture onto the school site.

In my role as Director of the Mayfair Initiative, I have encountered dozens of corporate leaders, foundation officers, and other community members waiting to be asked for their assistance. They all recognize that it will take all of our collective resources and energy to make Alum Rock the quality District it should have been all along.

I will work to ensure that parents and the community feel welcomed and feel that they can make a difference in the education we provide our students. There is too much work that needs to be done to expect that our school personnel can do it all. We need the energy and ideas from the community that have gone unappreciated for too long.
