ABOUT DAN BAKER...
------------------------------------------------------------

Following graduation from the University of Virginia in 1988, Dan Baker chose Long Beach to be his home, and joined the U.S. Customs Service as a federal law enforcement officer. Motivated by his desire to give back to the community, Dan revitalized the U.S. Customs Law Enforcement Explorer Program to increase youth mentoring efforts. Also, he became a Big Brother and mentor at Long Beach Poly High School.

During his tenure with Customs, Dan served as a Supervisory Customs Inspector at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles working to keep illegal drugs out of the U.S. While working full time with U.S. Customs, Dan attended Western State University school of Law, graduated Magna Cum Laude and joined the California bar in 1998.

In addition to his council duties, Dan is a part time teacher with the Long Beach Unified School District. He also worked as an attorney with Marron & Associates, a Long Beach based private practice that specializes in Maritime law.

Dan has served as a board member of Long Beach Area Citizens Involved, chair of the Long Beach Police Chief's Gay and Lesbian Advisory Group, member of the Mayor's Strategic Plan Task Force, chair of the Citizen Police Complaint Commission, and is a graduate of the Long Beach Neighborhood Leadership Training Program.

Dan was elected to the Long Beach City Council in March 1999. Following his re-election to a full term in April 2000, Dan was elected Vice Mayor by a unanimous vote of his council colleagues. Dan chairs the City Council's State Legislation & Environmental Affairs Committee and is Vice Chair of the City Council's Committees on Federal Legislation and Environmental Affairs and the Personnel and Civil Service committees.

The California State Senate appointed Dan to the Defense Retention and Conversion Council, and the League of California Cities appointed him to their Housing, Community and Economic Development Policy Committee. He also chairs the Long Beach Housing Authority and represents Long Beach on the Los Angeles County Sanitation Board. Dan is presently serving on the boards of the National Conference for Community and Justice, the International City Theatre, serves on the City's Hate Crimes Response Team and is a member of the Lions Club.

As mayor, Dan will work with residents and neighborhood leaders to improve the quality of life in all of Long Beach's neighborhoods, strengthen our city's economic base and continue to develop our city as a center of culture and entertainment.

Dan wants to extend an invitation to everyone who would like to help our city reach its potential to join his team and become part of the new era of leadership in Long Beach.
