Biography:

James V. Scariot Sr Age:52 Married to Kathy 24 1/2 yrs. 3 children 3 Grandchildren 30 yr Salinas resident

Education:

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration/Management from San Jose State in June 1995. Additionally, I received an Associate of Arts degree from Hartnell Community College where I majored in Business Administration and Administration of Justice in January 1983.I am a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute and the Monterey County Leadership Institute.

Experience:

I am a Sergeant for the Monterey County Sheriff's Department, where I have worked for over 18 years. During those years, I worked as a Correctional Officer, a Patrol Officer, an Investigator, a Narcotics Investigator, a temporary Investigative Sergeant, a Patrol Sergeant, and an Internal Affairs Sergeant. I have worked in all three of our stations during my career. I understand and appreciate the immense diversity of Monterey County and the people we serve.

Community Service:

I am one of the primary instructors in the parent education classes called Parent Awareness Collaborative Training (PACT). Our team teaches parents about the peer pressure and outside influences their children are being exposed to on a daily basis. PACT is taught in English and Spanish. I teach a wide variety of in-house courses. I am a peer support team member. I am a member of the Critical Incident Response team. I am an adult advisor to the Monterey County Explorer's Post #211. I am the Vice Chair of the Monterey County Crime Prevention Officer's Association. I am a member of the Fogcutters, the running team that represents the department at the annual Baker to Vegas Challenge Cup Relay and the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics. I have been an awards presenter at the Special Olympic Games. I am this year's department coordinator for Special Olympics. I provide public presentations on Raves and Date Rape Drugs. I taught religious education for 14 ½ years and continue to be active in the lay ministry at my church. Other volunteer community involvement included the Child Abuse Prevention Council, youth baseball, and the North Salinas High School Booster Club. I also volunteered as a sports trainer and youth counselor. I have received awards from Congressman Sam Farr, Senator Bruce McPherson, Assmblyman Simon Salinas, and Supervisors Lou Cacagno and Edith Johnson for my volunteer work. I was selected the as the Deputy Volunteer of the Year 2001 by American Legion Post #31. Serving the public is the cornerstone of my campaign.
