Accountability at all levels within the department

I am a values-based person. Every week, our employees receive a paycheck from Monterey County. The check is for an 80 hour period. I expect each and every employee to account for those 80 hours regardless of whether they are salaried or hourly employees. I expect each and every employee of the department to treat each other and all of the citizens they meet with dignity and respect. I expect our employees to dress and act in a professional manner. I expect our employees to work with the citizens of Monterey County to solve the problems within the various communities.

Increased service to the communities we protect.

I expect our employees to work with the citizens of Monterey County to solve the problems within the various communities. The Salinas Office is too large to be managed by a single individual. I had been exploring two possible sites for a North Monterey County Office prior to my assignment to Internal Affairs. There is a vacant building in Castroville and another in Pajaro (Royal Oaks). An additional office would cut down on response time for calls for service and provide a more realistic span of control for the station commanders and sergeants.

Maintain high standards for hiring and retention

I am opposed to relaxing our standards for hiring new employees. In my current assignment, I am experiencing what happens when the standards are relaxed. I propose to assign each deputy in our Corrections Bureau a patrol hire date to establish their seniority. They will maintain that seniority when their rotation date comes up. I propose to hire lateral transfers, fully informing them that persons still currently in Corrections will have seniority over them, to immediately relieve the critical shortage that now exists in our Patrol Division.
