Lou Calcagno has lived since his birth in Moss Landing, California. He is a self-employed dairyman and farmer in North Monterey County following a 75 year tradition of his family. He attended local schools in Monterey County and majored in Dairy Husbandry and Manufacturing at Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo. He is married 45 years to the former Carol Lanini and is the father of two children, Louie F. and Deborah.

Lou has held numerous elected or appointed leadership position in business and government at the local, state and federal level. A longtime dairy farmer from Moss Landing, Lou's early public service was in behalf of dairy business trade groups. In over 40 years of such service Lou was a Director or Officer of every important state and national dairy group. Protecting Elkhorn Slough, neighboring his dairy operation, brought him to the Chairmanships of committees and foundations which preserve enhance wetlands while accommodating public access.

From 1981 to 1998 Lou was a member of the Monterey County Planning Commission. From 1992 until 1997 he served on the California Coastal Commission, ultimately as Chairman. He was Director of the California Coastal Conservancy from 1996 to 1997 and from 1984 to 1998 was a member of the Monterey County Agricultural & Historic Lands Conservancy. As a Supervisor Lou served as a member of the Board of Supervisor's sub-committee for the Water Resources Agency and also as a sub-committee member of the Monterey County Vintners & Grower's Association for industry development in Monterey County.

Lou at present is serving on the following boards: Pajaro River Watershed Flood Prevention Authority Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority LAFCO, Local Agency Formation Commission Rancho Natividad Board of Directors (training facility for at-risk youth) TAMC, Transportation Agency for Monterey County Board of Supervisors, Sub-committee for Monterey County Finance & Budget FORC, Fort Ord Reuse Committee, isues relating to existing and future housing & Infrastructure on the former military reservation.
