Teacher retention and recruitment

By Fel Anthony Amistad

Candidate for Board Member; San Mateo Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
The SMUHSD should seek positive ways to retain quality teachers and to recruit more science and math instructors.
The high cost of living in the San Mateo area scares away many potential teachers. The SMUHSD needs to improve the retention and hiring of quality teachers in the math and science areas. The schools should also expand social science, computer science and literacy courses. There should be additional counseling centers, tutoring and mentoring. Teachers should get training and continuous education.

Parents must also help and tutor students. As a volunteer math tutor myself at my daughter's elementary school at George Hall in San Mateo, I feel the joy of working with youngsters whose minds are developing and learning. I want to ensure that education is a prioritized part of our lives. It must be given importance.

I believe that SMUHSD should seek its retired teachers and allow some to return to teach on a part-time or emergency basis. It is critical to the smooth operation of the District schools.
