This is AL MAYBERRY:

Al has spent his entire adult life as an educator. In Marin County, and throughout the Bay Area, he has created, run and taught dozens of successful programs in public and private schools, including:

  • Mill Valley Middle School
  • The Planet
  • Tam Valley School
  • Edna Maguire
  • St. Patrick's
  • St. Hilary's
  • Marin Country Day
  • Marin Primary and Middle Schools
  • Lagunitas School
  • Town School for Boys
  • San Francisco Public Schools
  • Berkeley Public Schools (The Model School, Oxford, Thousand Oaks, LeConte)
  • Oakland Public Schools
  • Piedmont Middle School

Al's work at Marin Primary, which is ongoing, began with his development of the Integrated Subjects Projects Lab in 1990. These acclaimed classes involving hand-tool woodworking, electronics, and engineering are based on the most successful models in education and use hands-on, project-based learning designed in collaboration between students and teachers.

In "The Lab," students choose projects which they research, design, layout and build. Lab projects require library and on-line research, drafting and layout (which includes above-grade-level math), real-life problem-solving and teamwork. This inter-disciplinary approach which is student- and teacher-driven has resulted in very high achievement levels.

His unusually strong background in curriculum development and educational theory, and his hands-on program experience, will bring important and needed strengths to the Tam Board.
