I am Nancy Sidebotham. I was born in New Jersey but spent most of my life, until I was 16, living in Panama. I am bi-lingual, English and Spanish. I also speak some French.

When I came to Oakland in '64 I decided to make it my home. I attended the old Merritt College, on what was then, Grove Street. I went on to Cal State to get my History degree. I then applied for and received my Tax Preparer's license. I taught classes and also started my own business.

I have been a community activist since the mid-80s. So much so that I have been the target of a drive-by shooting because I stood on the side of the police. I strongly support community policing as a preventive measure to crime and as a tool to build a stronger community through trust but, it is a long, slow, process however it is absolutely worth the effort.

I am an advocate of economic revitalization. I have helped to form merchant groups---to get them up and running. And to also aid those that have lost their momentum over the years---I pitch in and give them that helping hand or fill in as an officer. I Co-Chaired the very successful, citywide, Shop Oakland 2000 campaign and will also Co-Chair this year's Shop Oakland 2001 campaign.

Another of my major concerns is infrastructure. We must make this a top priority because so many other issues hinge on it. It must be repaired, and equally important, it must be maintained. We can't support housing if there is no foundation of services or a physical infrastructure of sound storm drains and sewers to support the needs of its citizens. This is truly a health and safety issue. We cannot invite people to live in Oakland but don't have schools for their children to attend.

Here is a partial list of my activities that have served to better the Oakland community and District 6:
