Are our schools healthy places?

By Calvin Ray Murphy, II

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Monrovia Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
When our daughter entered Monroe Elementary we were shocked at the condition of the restrooms. Now she is a Senior and finally the restrooms are getting a make over.
Just how safe is a school when the restrooms smell like urine at 7:30 a.m.? When we first enrolled our daughter at Monroe Elementary, in 1987, we were shoked that the restrooms smelled of urine in the mornings. Now all three of our children have gone through Monroe and moved on. Two are in High School and one at Sante Fe and finally Monroe's restrooms are being replaced. But the restrooms at many other schools in Monrovia are in dire need of attention. Is it really safe to send 700 + students to Santa Fe and force them to use unclean restrooms? California law requires better conditions in the restrooms at your gas station than exists in many of Monrovia's schools.

We are now spending millions renovating the schools in Monrovia. But why did those schools get so run down. Why did it take so long to get simple roof leaks repaired? Why was water damage allowed before simple roof repairs were done. It is time to take better care of the facilities Monrovia has, time to keep them clean, safe and healthy places to study. A vote for Calvin Murphy is a vote to take better care of our precious schools in the future.
