Just how important is music? How important are the arts?

By Calvin Ray Murphy, II

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Monrovia Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
On January 1, 1901 the Monrovia Town Band marched down Colorado Blvd in Pasadena; the first marching band to ever be in the Rose Parade...will Monrovia be there after 100 years?
When the Los Angeles Dodgers opened their season at Dodger Stadium this year, our daughter and three other Monrovia High Wildcat Marching Band students were on the field playing for the crowd. She holds that memory as the hi-lite of her young life. Imagine how our young children will feel if we provide them the means and opportunity to march down Colorado Blvd and celebrate 100 years of marching bands in the Rose Parade! Imagine the pride our children will have when they march, dressed in gleaming new uniforms before 1 billion people and represent our fair community!

But it won't happen if the Board of Education is not fully and squarely behind our students and our band.

Our band uniforms are over ten years old. New ones cost hundreds of dollars apiece. In Sante Fe Middle School there are over 100 students in the band programs, the same it true at Clifton. We have just about 100 uniforms for the band right now, yet we have a real potential to have a marching band with more than 200 students in just a couple of years!

Maxwell Strain works very hard, spending many long days, from before 6 a.m. and until after 10 p.m. two or more days a week. He needs an aide and the band needs a marching instructor. But this year the school budget allowed only an additional $1,000 for Monrovia High School's Music programs. When will the Board show that arts and music matter?

A vote for Calvin Murphy is a vote to greatly increase funding for the arts and music programs in all of our schools.

A vote to find the funds to purchase 200 brand new band uniforms, to purchase new band equipment and to support the ColorGuard and DrumLine programs.

A vote for Calvin Murphy is a vote to send our daughters and sons marching down Colorado Blvd on January 1, 2001 and celebrating 100 years of marching bands in the Rose Parade.

A VOTE FOR CALVIN MURPHY IS A VOTE FOR OUR CHILDREN!
