Widen the Perspective of the Council - Not Our Roads/Traffic Management Plan For Moraga Road Corridor

By Thomas G. Del Beccaro

Candidate for Council Member; City of Lafayette

This information is provided by the candidate
The solution to Lafayette's traffic congestion lies with improved traffic management not the widening of Lafayette's main roads.
Did you know that the Council has voted to increase Mt. Diablo Blvd. at Oak Hill Road to 8 Lanes?

Did you know that 82% of the traffic on Moraga Road is not from Lafayette?

Did you know that the City can afford to fund traffic enforcement but the Council would rather use the funds for a future City Hall?

It is time to reverse those policies and to stop the widening of our roads. Mt. Diablo Blvd. and Moraga Roads, are at full capacity. Any further attempt to increase the capacity of those roads will not work, will further sacrifice what is left of Lafayette's small town character and will further diminish its pedestrian environment. One of the first initiatives I will undertake if elected is to reverse the decision to widen Mt. Diablo Blvd.

Lafayette can achieve improved traffic flow by (a) coordinating the starting times for its schools, (b) by the enforcement of the speed limits on the main road entrances to Lafayette, (c) by the installation of metering technology/lights for transitting traffic during commute periods, (d) by the use of a shuttle service from Moraga to Lafayette Bart, (e) by the reconfiguration of the entrance of Lafayette School, and (f) by the building of satellite parking facilities within the downtown corridor (in environmentally acceptable areas). Those mitigation measures should be a part of long term circulation plan for all of Lafayette.

I also propose that an independant committee of Lafayette citizens be appointed to design a 25 year development plan for Lafayette. The committee should be comprised of citizens with engineering, land use, and retail experience but no vested interest in the process, i.e. truly independant community members. Their responsibility will be to design a plan for Lafayette's future and their goal will be to preserve Lafayette's small town character.

Vote to widen the perspective of our Council not our roads. Vote Del Beccaro for Council.
