Political Philosophy for Dan Slater

Candidate for
Member, City Council; City of Orange

This information is provided by the candidate

I am running for this office so that I can continue to lead Orange back to prosperity. Prosperity in the business and retail sectors will improve our tax base and enable Orange to build a new library, expand and enhance our parks and open spaces, and improve our infrastructure (roads, storm drains, ect). I want Orange to continue to experience a decreasing crime rate and make our entire city one we can be proud of.

Issues and Position Statement

City Hall - Within my power, prevent financial losses due to fraud, corruption, bankruptcy and unwarranted litigation. Maintain the most cost effective delivery of public services and privatize where practical, maintaining a balanced budget at all times with no increasing of fees or taxes.

East Orange - Support well planned development that proves to be an asset to the City both environmentally and economically.

Library - Retain a fiscally responsible City budget so as to enhance existing library services and plan for a new main library.

Crime/Police Dept. - Support the police department with a special emphasis towards crime prevention efforts including support of current anti-graffiti and anti-gang efforts. Continue to increase police personnel "on the street", to continue drastic crime reduction.

Zoning - Create and maintain balanced approach to zoning and land uses for the benefit of the community as a whole. Support zoning that will maintain the historical integrity of downtown Orange and continue to encourage zoning that will provide for economic growth and development throughtout the City. Such zoning efforts shall also be balanced with property interests, rights and maintaining values.

Malls - Continue an active and concerted effort towards providing for retail "re-birth" of the Orange and City malls. They must have the complete support of the City, so as to make these centers regain the economic vitality they once had.

Traffic/Fwy - Work to increase traffic flow and circulation on existing major arteries, corridors and freeways, and protect established residential neighborhoods from excess traffic.

Old Towne - Continue to promote the visual and economic Rennaissance that has begun in the Historic District.

Parks - Continue to promote parks and trail restoration, enhancement and expansion.

Housing - Continue to promote housing that complements Orange and doesn't compromise it. Encourage quality senior housing projects.

Shopping Centers - Continue to promote enhancement and refurbishment of "tired" retail centers and grocery stores.

The goals I want to accomplish are:

  • Incorporation of county islands.
  • New main Library.
  • Lowest crime rate in Orange County.
  • Increase privitization of public services.
  • More parks, open spaces and bike trails.
  • More youth sports fields/facilities.
  • Promote the downtown Plaza Historic District as a destination with a greater variety of businesses.

I would accomplish these goals with:

  • Demonstrated pratical and sensible leadership.
  • Demonstrated promotion of business growth to improve the tax base.
  • Demonstrated leadership and hard work over the past four years.
  • Demonstrated leadership that represents the best interests of the entire community and not special interest groups.
  • Demonstrated leadership that represents integrity and the willingness to take a stand - NOT POLITICS!
  • Demonstrated leadership that puts words into action - NOT LIP SERVICE!
  • Demonstrated leadership that is decisive and visionary.
