Position Papers
OPPOSITION TO THE PROPOSED EL TORO AIRPORT
I am strongly opposed to the plans being developed by the County of Orange to convert the existing El Toro MCAS to a commercial airport. Like all of us who live in Irvine, I believe the development of a commercial airport so close to our homes and schools would have a terrible impact on the quality of life in our community, as well as the quality of the educational experience for our children.
SUPPORT FOR THE SCHOOL BOND INITIATIVE (PROPOSITION 1A)
I support Proposition 1A, which will authorize a multi-billion dollar bond issuance for school construction. With a rapidly expanding population in California, as well as in Irvine, it is essential to have adequate school facilities so that we are able to continue our class size reducation efforts, while at the same time move away from the use of portable classrooms.
OPPOSITION TO PROPOSITION 8
I oppose Proposition 8, which would create independent school councils responsible for curriculum, funding and other management functions at each school, in addition to creating a Chief Inspector of all schools. The bureaucracy created would simply duplicate our current community and parental involvement, but would do so at an enormously increased cost.
