Basic Skills Instruction Ensures Student Success

By Karen Chavez

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Fullerton School District

Students must be schooled in basic skills if they are to succeed and be able to compete for jobs. Students who haven't been drilled in spelling or taught to write properly will be passed over by those who have perfected these skills. Math skills like multiplication tables and computation also need to be drilled and practiced. New-fangled teaching strategies like giving calculators to young children need to be eliminated. We mustn't be afraid to use traditional teaching methods that have turned out well-educated people for generations.

Along these same lines, I support the teaching of music and art to improve academic performance and propagate cultural literacy. Studies prove that music and art instruction cause reading, comprehension, and math scores to increase. Teaching a basic skills curriculum without the arts is, in my opinion, not as worthwhile as it could be.
