Planes & Airports

By Lou Bone

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Tustin

This information is provided by the candidate
We need fewer planes, not more, flying over Tustin. I am strongly opposed to two commercial airports, and I will fight against the northern expansion of runways at John Wayne Airport.
I am concerned not only about a commercial airport at El Toro but also about John Wayne Airport. The key issues are the number of planes flying over Tustin and the flight pattern of the planes.

Currently, planes fly over Tustin when landing at John Wayne Airport (JWA). While most of the attention has focused on El Toro, few in the media are telling the story of JWA. Currently the plan is to expand JWA to the north, causing planes to fly even lower over Tustin which means more noise for Tustin residents. I will fight against this.

Concerning El Toro, I've met with officials for and against an airport. When really pressed on the issue, they admit that it's up to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to decide the flight patterns - and they're really not certain. At my request, Congressman Cox has contacted the FAA regarding possible takeoff and landing patterns at El Toro. Until the FAA decides the takeoff and landing patterns of a possible airport at El Toro, it is difficult to determine the impact on Tustin.

I am strongly opposed to two commercial airports so close to Tustin. It is difficult enough to control the expansion plans of one commercial airport, let alone two.
