Balance: Environmental protection and economic vitality

By Cynthia Murray

Candidate for Supervisor; Marin County; District 5

This information is provided by the candidate
I am committed to maintaining the balance between protecting the extraordinary land on which we live and sustaining a thriving economy.
My record clearly proves my commitment to maintaining a balance: preserving and enhancing the extraordinary land on which we live, and sustaining a thriving economy.

I co-authored Novato's Urban Growth Boundary, sought and won 70% voter support, and implemented a powerful weapon to stop sprawl. Under my leadership, our city dramatically increased open space, created a wildlife preserve, purchased Scottsdale March and pushed forward a 1000 acre wetlands restoration at Hamilton.

As Novato City Councilmember, I personally led the effort to bring non-polluting companies to Novato: Mindscape, Sonic Solutions, Inference, University of
Phoenix among many others. Under my leadership, Novato has become the CD-ROM world capital, and provided hundreds of high-paying jobs to keep our citizens here and off Highway 101.

I fight overdevelopment. I want Bel Marin Keys Unit V added to the Hamilton wetlands restoration. At Black Point, I led the effort to create a 64.5 acre wildlife
preserve. I will protect and uphold the Indian Valley and Black Point Community Plans.

As your Supervisor, I will never sacrifice the environment to achieve other goals.

On the City Council, I called for an Economic Commission and proposed the Economic Development Master Plan of Novato, which will plan our future economic growth with precision and detail.

Beginning in 1992, I have led efforts to revitalize our city's downtown, working extensively with merchants, property owners and residents. My efforts resulted in:
Campaign for Restoration of the Novato theatre; the drafting and adoption of the Downtown Specific Plan; the Downtown Streets and Drainage Project; the successful 4th of July parade; retention of the Farmer's Market; revision of city regulations to streamline permits and beautification.

As your Supervisor, I will work to keep our local economy strong by:
¨ Working aggressively to attract and retain non-polluting high tech companies; ¨ Improving transportation within Marin and between counties; ¨ Preserving and enhancing our environment; ¨ Fighting for advanced telecommunications; ¨ Increasing workforce housing; ¨ Improving our local schools; ¨ Improving child care.
