I grew up in San Francisco, graduated from Bowdoin College with a BA in 1990, and the Stanford School of Education graduate school in 1995. My husband, Tom, and I moved to Hillsborough in 1999, so our children could attend Hillsborough Schools. They attended North School and recently graduated from Crocker Middle School. They are now both in high school. If re-elected, I will continue to bring passion, experience and vision to my service on the School Board.

EXPERIENCE

  • HCSD SCHOOL BOARD - I have served as Clerk, Vice President and now President of the School Board. My role as liaison to the Hillsborough Schools Foundation and Associated Parents Group has enabled me to work in partnership with our parent leaders to ensure that all students' needs are met, and that issues are thoughtfully resolved. I have worked hard on the Policy Committee to ensure all of our policies are up-to-date and reflect the best interests of students. My work on the Communications Committee has resulted in an updated District Website and more frequent communications to parents about district business through Joint Messages from the Board President and Superintendent. I have learned how to balance competing priorities, manage challenging confidential personnel decisions, steward an unpredictable budget, and collaborate around a common vision.

The role of a Trustee requires a significant time commitment and I have dedicated countless hours to attending Superintendent Coffees, Staff Superintendent Chats, New Parent Receptions, Community Roundtable Meetings, HSF Events, APG Events and many more district related events. I'm passionate about continuing HCSD's tradition of excellence for students, and being a great place to work for all staff. I will continue to dedicate my time to this work.

  • SAN MATEO SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION - I was nominated to serve as a member of Executive Board within a chapter of the California School Boards Association, which serves 22 school districts, the Community College District and the County Office of Education. I have served as Area Representative, (representing the San Mateo-Foster City, Burlingame, Millbrae, San Bruno and Hillsborough Districts), Secretary and now Vice President. I led several "Thinking Sessions," based on the Time to Think (link to http://www.timetothink.com/thinking-environment/) model for Executive Board members to increase our individual and collective effectiveness as School Board Members. I co-led several dinner events including one on Design Thinking and another on Strategic Planning. I also participated in advocacy work by visiting our local legislators to discuss state laws affecting local school districts. Finally, I've served as the Kent Award Application Chair for the county for the past two years, which are awards given to outstanding school programs.

  • HILLSBOROUGH SCHOOLS FOUNDATION - I served on the Hillsborough Schools Foundation Board for three years, culminating as Co-President, 2009-2010, where I helped manage daily operations of over 100 volunteers and 4 staff members, successfully raising over $3 million dollars for our schools. This experience enables me to be an effective school board member because I have an intimate understanding of the strong partnership between the district and the foundation.

  • NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE is a 501©(3) non-profit national organization of mothers and daughters, dedicated to serving their local communities. I have served in multiple leadership roles including Vice President of Philanthropy and Jobs Chair. My daughters and I volunteer together, as they progress from 7th-12th grade, at 28 different local philanthropies.

Other Leadership Experience:
  • San Mateo Library Foundation - Board Member (2009-2012)
  • Crocker School Parent Group - Board Member, Networking Coordinator (2011-2012)
  • Junior League of San Francisco - Board Member, Strategic Planning Council Director (2008-2009); Strategic Planning Chair (2006-2007)
  • North School Parent Group - School Board Trustee Representative (2005-2006)
  • North Hillsborough Preschool - Parent Group President (2004-2005) For a full resume, please see my Linked In Profile: https://www.linkedin.com/pub/margi-power/2a/b37/829
