Statement of Jameel "Haji" Munir

Our small town of Brisbane is unique in the Bay Area, ideal for both families and businesses. For that reason my wife and I moved here in 1997. We have been actively involved in Brisbane civic affairs for all of the 18 years we have lived here and will continue to do so. I am a UC Davis graduate with MS degrees in both civil and mechanical engineering and a California registered professional civil engineer and state licensed general building contractor.

My 40+ years of professional work experience covers both private and public sectors, ranging from city planning to regulation of public utilities, project management for the construction of large-scale industrial projects, and the design and building of single family homes. I believe the lessons learned from 17 years on the Brisbane Planning Commission, working together with my fellow commissioners and city staff, to set goals that are specific, measurable, realistic and achievable, as well as my willingness to hear the public on issues before us, make me well qualified to continue my volunteer service as a member of the Brisbane City Council.

If I am elected to serve on the Council, you can be assured that I will address all issues that come before that body, including the Baylands, in the same fair-minded, independent, balanced, analytical and citizen-oriented manner that I have tried to follow in my past work on the Planning Commission. Specific areas of interest with opportunities for improvements in our quality of life that I will be in support of if elected:

  • Public safety: traffic control, and police and fire protection, disaster preparedness
  • Collaboration with our schools
  • Parks and recreation facilities
  • Affordable housing for our senior citizens and low income families
  • Economic growth that balances social needs with environmental protection
  • Revitalization of the downtown area
  • A balanced approach to development of the Baylands that keeps it free of housing I have received endorsements from + Environmentalist, and the Loma Prieta Chapter of The Sierra Club, Anja Miller + former Mayor of Brisbane, Ray Miller + former Mayor and current City Councilman, Carolyn Parker + Planning commissioner, Tony Attard + former City Councilman and Planning Commissioner, Prem Lall, Carole Nelson + former Brisbane Community Development Director. I respectfully seek your voting members' support as well.
