Meet Laura Martinez

By Laura Martinez

Candidate for Board Member; Sequoia Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Name: Laura Martinez Occupation: After School Program Director & Family College Resource Center Coordinator Age: 30

Education & Qualifications: Whittier College, B.A., Sociology

Appointed to the Sequoia Union High School District Board, I am honored to serve as your Trustee.

Ensuring SUHSD's strong fiscal health is a top priority, including overseeing our Measure A bond. Maintaining a healthy budget enables me to continue closing the achievement gap by:

Preparing our students for college and careers Providing student-enrichment opportunities Providing professional-development resources for teachers

I work with students and families at East Palo Alto Phoenix Academy (grades 7-12 charter school). I'm passionate about college and career readiness and extracurricular activities. I'm the first in my family to graduate from a four-year college because of support I received from my high school's college center and a college prep program. Extracurricular activities support students to explore their interests and career paths, and develop their talents.

I want every student to have the opportunity to fulfill their dreams.

Serving on the East Palo Alto City Council from 2008-2015 and as one of the youngest mayors in America, I ensured that East Palo Alto had a balanced budget for the first time in its history. I also secured funding for Safe Routes to School and opened the first skate park for youth.

With my unique background in elected office and education, I respectfully ask for your vote.
