Affordable & Sustainable
I have yet to read a rent control policy that has successfully accomplished what it was intended for. However there is a discussion worth having on rent stabilization. I support programs that will provide more opportunities for affordable housing and housing retention.I would support a policy that would require all developers provide an affordable component within all their developments and require office developers to pay into an affordable housing fund. If an opted out fee is created then it needs to be an amount that actually can provide housing or retention of. We lost a huge opportunity with the DTPP by not requiring an affordable component in ALL developments. We cannot repeat this. To retain affordability I would suggest that we expand the Safety first program .This low interest loan program will be forgiven if the property remains affordable for a period of 5 years. I would suggest for another promise of 5 years affordability we PARTNER with the property owner with another low interest loan for safety upgrades such as stairways, windows, roofs & windows. This program can be supported by the affordable benefits program received from developers.
