Why is Jim running for City Council?

By Jim Wickham

Candidate for Council Member; City of Mill Valley

This information is provided by the candidate
"I'm running for City Council to give back to the community that has given so much to my family and me."
Many of you know Jim from his many years here on the police force, as a parent and grandparent, and as a volunteer in community events like the Carnival and Winterfest. We know how much he cares about and understands our small town. Mill Valley is at a crossroads with housing development and density, traffic congestion, deteriorating public services, sewers and maintenance. We need Jim's deep understanding of how Mill Valley works to address these issues together as a community while keeping our small town charm.

Jim knows Mill Valley. Jim was born and raised here, raised five children with his wife Suzie here, and served 37 years as a police officer here. He has an insider's knowledge of how the City works, the staff and volunteers that makes things happen, and how we can now make our town even better. He feels our community deserves an exceptionally high level of excellence, value, accountability, and transparency, and he'll work hard as a Council Member to deliver that.

Jim knows how to work with people, especially in emergencies. In his work as a police officer here, Jim is used to working closely with all kinds of people to resolve complex issues and find solutions. He knows first hand what has to happen with local public safety in emergencies like fire, flooding and earthquakes, how to work with other local and regional agencies, and why it's critical to consider diverse needs, interests and viewpoints in every decision.

Jim knows how to be effective. Jim started Mill Valley Police safety programs like Neighborhood Watch, worked with schools and neighborhood leaders to make our roads and neighborhoods safer, introduced proven drug and alcohol programs for teens like Every 15 Minutes and our Social Host ordinance. He believes strongly in cooperation, communication and collaboration, the same qualities that have always made Mill Valley so special, "the little town that could."

Jim is approachable, thoughtful and diligent. For years, he looked after us here as a police officer, now he wants to "serve and protect" our community as our Council Member.
